What does goat meat taste like?
Taste-wise, in comparison to other meats, it’s closest to lamb or beef but milder in flavor. This makes it one of the most versatile meats on the market.
What do the goats eat?
We are proud to offer pasture raised, grass fed goat meat, and whenever possible, we try to supply the demand for orders straight from the Shepherd Boy Farm. However, since the demand for goat is high and continues to rise, we occasionally must procure goats from other local Indiana farms. In those cases, we will do our best to satisfy our customers’ wishes. Before you buy goat online, please contact us for any specific requests regarding your order and we will try to accommodate as much as possible.
What’s the difference between lamb and sheep, goat, mutton and chevon?
Goats and sheep are different species. Sheep usually have wool, while goats have hair, but there are sheep with hair instead of wool as well. Each has its own unique taste and texture when eaten, each of which is entirely subjective. Goats tend to be more active and therefore less fatty and softer than sheep. Sheep meat is more common in eastern countries like India, while goat is more of a western delicacy.
Lamb is a term for young sheep, and mutton is a term for the meat from an adult sheep. Chevon is the proper term for goat meat, similar to the way we use “beef” to refer to the meat that comes from cows.
Is your goat meat organic?
Though not officially “certified” organic, our goats are local, free-range/pasture-raised and not administered hormones. We strive for the highest standards when it comes to raising our animals using sustainable, ethical practices and taking care to ensure the best, USDA premium-quality meat for our customers. We also offer Halal-certified slaughter if requested. If you’re looking for organic goat meat for sale, you’ll be happy purchasing from Shepherd Boy Farms, even though we cannot claim the official certification. 😉

Storage & Cooking
What’s the proper way to thaw frozen goat meat for best taste?
For best taste, frozen goat should be kept in its package during thawing. Doing this will help to preserve the natural juices and flavor. We recommend thawing overnight in your refrigerator, but if you need it to thaw more quickly, you can immerse the package in cold water until completely thawed, changing the water every 30 minutes to keep it cold. We do not recommend defrosting in the microwave!
How do you cook goat meat?
