Who’s Behind the Whole Foods Brand?
SaferWay and Clarksville Natural Grocery preceded Whole Foods. SaferWay was founded by John Mackey and Renee Hardy Laswon, and Clarksville Natural Grocery was founded by Mark Skilles and Craig Weller. On September 20, 1980, both of these stores merged to create the first Whole Foods Market in Austin Texas.
The goal of the newly created company was to become the premiere organic foods market. To do this, it acquired several organic food stores including Wellspring and Freshfield’s. As of September 2015, there are 431 Whole Foods Market in the United States, and it has 91,000 employees.
John Mackey and Walter Robb were co-CEOs of the company, but Robb left the position in November 2016. John Elstrott is the chairman.
Amazon.com acquire Whole Foods Market for $13.7 billion. The deal was finalized on August 28, 2017. It may have considered the value of adding goat meat to Whole Foods’ selection.
What’s Whole Food’s Stance on Food and Cosmetic Quality?
Whole Foods doesn’t sell food or cosmetics with any ingredient they deem unhealthy. There’s a list on their website that contains all the ingredient banned from Whole Foods. Here’s some of them: BHA, BHT, BVO, MSG, TBHQ, DSS, DATEM, disodium calcium EDTA, and disodium dihydrogen EDTA. Goat meat at Whole Foods might not have these ingredients.
Whole Foods doesn’t purchase eggs from farms that keep hens in battery cages. They also don’t carry foie gras.
In June 2011, Whole Foods stopped selling body care products that contained ingredients that were deemed not organic, according to the USDA National Organic Program standards. To be accepted as organic, the body care product must be made of at least 95% of organic ingredients.

Ratings and Labeling
Whole Foods has a rating system in various departments. The seafood department has a sustainability rating system designed to grade wild-caught seafood. Farm-raised seafood are rated for aquaculture standards. The meat department rates items based on the Global Animal Partnership, which evaluates animal welfare. This includes any goat meat at Whole Foods. The produce department measures the farm’s quality, including GMO transparency, wage practices, and worker safety. Whole Foods is taking the lead in GMO transparency. GMO stands for genetically modified organisms. Whole Foods will start GMO labeling by 2018. Currently, Whole Foods utilizes the Responsibly Grown produce rating system, which requires growers to disclose whether or not they use GMO seeds or plant material.
